Brief

Design a 25-page publication celebrating Baker Boy (Danzal Baker OAM) following his recognition as Australian of the Year in 2019. The publication was required to educate readers on his life, career, and cultural impact while demonstrating how he has acted as a trailblazer within the Australian music industry and Indigenous representation. The design was restricted to a maximum of two colours.

Process

The design direction explored ways of visually celebrating Baker Boy's personality, energy, and cultural influence. A moodboard was developed featuring expressive typography, dynamic graphic elements, street art influences, and imagery that extended beyond the frame to amplify the subject's presence.

Inspired by Baker Boy's connection to hip-hop, dance, and youth culture, the visual language incorporated energetic lines, painted textures, and layered compositions. A vibrant orange and pink palette was selected as a contemporary interpretation of colours associated with the Indigenous flag, reflecting both cultural pride and Baker Boy's optimistic and energetic character.

Outcome

The final publication presents Baker Boy's story as a visual progression through different stages of his life and career. Early chapters utilise jagged image treatments, painted textures, and energetic compositions to reflect his youth and emergence as an artist. As the narrative explores themes of identity, racism, and representation, colour and composition are used symbolically to reinforce these experiences. The final chapter adopts a cleaner and more refined aesthetic, with sharper imagery and reduced visual intervention to represent Baker Boy's growth into an established artist and cultural leader.
