Brief
Create physical and digital promotional collateral for the release of Schöne Hände by Brian Eno & Cluster. The challenge was to develop an album cover and supporting visuals that communicated the atmosphere of the instrumental track through purely visual means, with all imagery created from scratch rather than sourced externally.
Process
The design process began by analysing the song's sonic qualities, particularly its repeating echoes, expansive sense of space, and metallic undertones. A moodboard was developed exploring concepts of resonance, oscillation, and reverb through physical materials and forms.
These explorations led to experimentation with metallic coils, rippling surfaces, and water as a medium for visualising sound. The repeated circular patterns created by water ripples became a compelling representation of echo and resonance, forming the foundation of the final visual direction.
Outcome
The final artwork translates the song's hopeful and dynamic soundscape into a tactile visual experience. Water ripples create a sense of rhythm, movement, and reverberation, while cool metallic tones and increased contrast emphasise the track's metallic textures. The resulting identity captures the expansive, resonant qualities of the music and extends across both physical and digital collateral.
